BT hits broadband milestone
A million customers have been hooked up to broadband Internet by UK telecoms giant BT, meeting their pledge to do so which was made last February when they had only 145,000 connections.
This figure was achieved by the falling cost of broadband subscription, and a multi-million advertising campaign and registration scheme.
For an area to be linked up to broadband, a certain level of interest (“trigger” level) from local customers had to be registered before an exchange can be ADSL-enabled. Now BT has reduced this number by 50 registrations, which for some areas is a twenty-five percent reduction.
First introduced in July 2002, BT’s registration scheme is the first of its kind in the world and has attracted interest from many overseas telecom companies.
To celebrate their achievement, the telecommunications firm has brought forward their deadlines for connecting telephone exchanges in some of the more remote parts of the UK to speedier Internet services.
