What are the main advantages of broadband?

For the average user, broadband had 3 main advantages. How important they are largely depend on how and what you use your online connection for.

Broadband connections are faster than the usual dial-up modem - "up to 10 times faster" says the blurb. And the operative word here is "up to". It all depends on the broadband provider and the package you have signed up for, on contention ratio and on the number of people online at the same time within your local loop. At times, it can be little faster than a V90 modem!

2.

Broadband has "lower latency". This means that the gap between your mouse click and something happening is small. Which could be important - especially to computer game players. A time delay between squeezing your virtual 100 rounds a second machine gun and your enemy being blasted to smithereens tends to lessen one's enjoyment!

Broadband is an "always on" connection. Like ISDN, it also connects up instantaneously - no more waiting annoyingly for your dial-up modem to perform its familiar minute-long karaoke.
